Alcestis, the demons, the embrace.
From Euripides to Etruria
The study focuses on the fourth century Etruscan volute krater from Vulci– ‘Alcsti Group’ – which is a special witness of the adaptation of the theatrical myth of Alcestis (Euripides) in Etruria. Through an iconographic and epigraphic analysis, starting from the embrace between Alcestis/Alcsti and Admetus/
Atmite contained by two demons, some reflections arise as regards rituals, death, love and the expressive power of the gesture of the different characters. Among the most relevant issues, the study lingers on the possible contribution of the Etruscan Alcestis to a present-day representation of the Euripidean Alcestis.
