Year 1968 is a critical year even for Italian literature, which has to answer to the new needs of the public and at the same time has to define the role of the intellectual in its contemporary society. The theatre is the object of several considerations among those who insert themselves in the theatre of the absurd, those who believe in the necessity of a political theatre and those who believe in a new literature, at the direction level. In this context, two theoretical texts for a new theatre appear: Il ventre del teatro by Giovanni Testori and Il manifesto per il nuovo teatro by Pier Paolo Pasolini. The two, starting from different positions will propose a new theatre in which at the centre of its reflection there will be the word and its evocative and symbolic power.
