My essay analyses the incipit of Asimov’s Foundation (1951-53) in order to point out the presence of Shakespearean echoes related to the imagery, the style and the structure of The Tempest. Not only will the analysis define the complex and mainly unexplored relation of mutual influence between Asimov and Shakespeare by focusing on a series of Asimov’s interesting works such as the short story entitled “The Immortal Bard” (1954) or the well-known Guide to William Shakespeare (1970); it will also describe the ways in which the Shakespearean matrix acts on the subtext of the incipit of Asimov’s Foundation and determines its nature, its forms and its development.
