Does the representation allow ethics? What kind of ethics? Moving from these questions, the paper offers a panoramic view on the main philosophic theories on the complex interrelations among the many factors involved in the performative process. The author examines first the various definition of “representation” we can use in theatrical studies and relates them to the concept of “ethics”, stating their incompatibility. It moves then to the sounding of the different points of view that allowed many playwriters and directors to get over the subsequent creative paralysis, finding a proper way to develop the performative action. The coincidence between the political and the artistic spheres offers the possibility to develop the ethics of the representation: a dimension where the community of the public is called to recognize the limits of an artificial representation and to try a reflection on the truth carried out by the performance.
