At the start of seventeenth century, the rise of early modern mass media, especially printed news, allowed much satirical scope to contemporary writers as an embodiment of the perennial quest for self-delusion and plebeian enticement. In this 1626 comedy The Staple of News, Ben Jonson staged this early modern specimen of mass media as a re-enactment of the morality theme of acquisitiveness and prodigality. The article considers the historical and cultural context of the rise of journalism in London and offers a short translation of the most topical passages.
