Theatre Studies as academic discipline was founded in Italy during the mid-’60s, not only through the activation of the first chairs in theatre history but from a methodological perspective thanks to a complete redefinition of the field and its object of enquiry, that until then focused on drama and literature. So, Theatre Studies was born as historical and philological discipline devoted to performance, as happened in other countries and universities from the beginning of XXth century; but soon started to challenge that scientific paradigm, experimenting a more widely concept of theatre extended to its socio-cultural context. The paper analyzes this unexpected and original shift taking into account the important relationship developed between many Italian theatre scholars and New Theatre, focusing in particular those experiences in which historians has been directly involved in artistic and creative processes.
