Purpose of the paper is to examine the historical evolution of the “new epic performance”, and of the “theatre of narration”. New epic performance is a formula created by G. Guccini e C. Meldolesi (2004), in order to define and study the main trend of Italian contemporary theatre: it is a theatre based mostly on storytelling, monologue, and one man show. The theatre of narration can be assumed as the aesthetics paradigm of this last trend. Also by tracing the careers of its main performers, we try to have a definition of theatre of narration, and to explain its aesthetics and poetical structure. In the end, we approach also the new epic performance in a broad sense, i.e. looking at satirical performances (R. Benigni, B. Grillo, D. Luttazzi etc.) and storytellig performances mixed with music and live concert (G. Gaber and the so-called teatro canzone), and how these performances influence and modify the theatre of narration.
