Against the background of the possible relation that can be established between religious rites and theater, the staging given by the sacri monti of Italian Alps accepts and changes some of the characteristics of traditional theater. The spirit of Counter-Reformation aims these artistic complexes and, leveraging on religious feeling, it tends to upset and bring out from the viewer/ faithful/actor the sense of the drama itself, playing on complex psychological mechanisms. So, the generated theater is referred to a familiar story, whose novelty depends completely from pathos. Built up on a fixed scene, the set is able to impress thanks to the symbolic value and the marriage between art, architecture and landscape that share the same narrative program.
