The essay analyzes Roméo et Jeannette by Jean Anouilh, staged in 1945, published two years later and described by the author himself as one of his “pièces noires”. Anouilh’s play, which is largely different from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, takes place in France in the Twentieth century. A special attention is devoted to the study of the dynamics among the characters and the comparison with the Shakespearean tragedy.
