Jacques Polieri and the theater of total movement: the stage space in perpetual motion
The twentieth century is the century of the denial of the Italian-style theatre. In the twentieth century, the space must be continually redefined for the staging or even built ad hoc. Jacques Polieri, French director and set designer, begins to radically transform the scenic space and the notion of staging, working against the Italian-style theatre. He starts from performances in which he creates mobile scenes (Le Livre and Gamme de 7) and at the end he designs theatre that are themselves mobile, such as the theatre of total movement. The aim of this essay is to illustrate and analyse Polieri’s space of total movement as a concrete alternative to the perspective space typical of the Italian-style theatre through the analysis of some of his stagings and the theatre spaces he designed and built.
