Mahfouz’s “Chef ”
This exploration of the intricate relationhip between theatre and food in contemporary drama pinpoints women’s writing and performance. The author examines two plays by contemporary playwrights: Selina Thompson’s Chewing the Fat and Sabrina Mahouz’s Chef. In the first, this author-performer-director flags up the negative impact food can have on an indivudal’s body and mind when taken in excess. In the
second, this dramatist-poet focuses on the positive role of food in the life of a female prison inmate, who cooks for her fellow prisoners, discovering a sense of fulfillment. In performance the plays are able to show both the negative and positive effects of food on the body and call on the spectator to reflect on these extremes.
