This article is an introduction to young Franco Fortini’s play, Anna, which appeared on Giacomo Noventa’s journal “Riforma letteraria” in the second half of the thirties. The play was always neglected by both its author and critics. In Anna, Fortini conveys the profound existential dis-tress that haunted him during his youth and early adulthood, a phase characterized by a watertight division between literary and artistic inter-ests and religious restlessness. Anna – actually the ghost of a prematurely dead girl – is a character who embodies Fortini’s early spiritual tension – which later took a ehical and political turn – a tension that also characterized his later developments.
