L’ambigua identità di Empusa e di altri esseri proteiformi nelle commedie di Aristofane: un problema di messinscena – Camilla Lietti – Stratagemmi 29/30
One of the most controversial passages of Aristophanes’ Frogs is certainly 285 ff., where the horrible and multiform Empusa appears. The scene has been object of many different interpretations, basically divided on the point about the presence, or the absence of Empusa on stage. Aim of the article is to point out how there are very good chances that Empusa was on stage, mainly reconsidering the scene from the point of view of the staging, and comparing it with Clouds 346ff. and other testimonia treating of multiform characters. Rephrasing the title of an article by Lillian Lawler (1943), “Empusa is a dancer”. But why Empusa? What is the meaning of her appearance on the stage?
