Plutus and its doubles: not relics to preserve, but voices to reactivate. This essay explores the metamorphic reception of Aristophanes’ Plutus across centuries and geographies – from ancient Athens to Renaissance Florence, from Baroque London to contemporary performances in Parma and Bloomsbury. At its core is a performative workshop led by director Marco Martinelli in 2022-2023, whose method of “bringing to life” engaged Italian and British students in a transhistorical, polyphonic journey. Interweaving the ancient text, its early modern rewritings, and present-day voices, the project restored the chorus to its full power of knowledge, tension, and transformation.
